Are you looking for gorgeous sandy Maine beaches? How about great Maine surf spots? Maybe you’re in the mood for hiking or some rocky coastline? Reid State Park offers all of that and more!

Reid State Park is located in Georgetown, ME. It is about a 30-minute (16 mi / 26 km) drive from Bath. Its long sandy beaches like Mile Beach and Half Mile Beach are rare in Maine. The sand dunes found here are another rarity. Surfers flock to the park in addition to hikers, picnickers, birders, and swimmers.

Let’s talk about why this is a great Maine state park, the logistics of visiting, enjoy some Reid State Park photos, and discuss how you can have a great day!

Here is where you can find the park

It is 16 mi (26 km) southeast of Bath, ME on the coast of Maine.

Reid State Park

Reid State Park is a lovely park that is popular for surfing (rated a top surf spot in Maine), swimming, kayaking, relaxing on the beach, hiking, and picnicking. The beaches here tend not to be as crowded as those in southern Maine (we MA residents have to drive further).

Upon entering the park, you’ll drive to an entrance cabin to pay the fee. There are two large parking areas near the beaches. If you go straight, you’ll head toward the northeast end of Mile Beach and Griffith’s Head. Bearing right will take you toward the southern end near Half Mile Beach.

Mile Beach

We met up with a friend on our visit who wanted to surf at Mile Beach. Mile Beach is a long curved stretch of coastline in Reid State Park. It is great for swimming, surfing, and relaxing on the beach. You’ll also find lovely driftwood here.

When you arrive at Mile Beach, you will see the beach in front of you, walking trails to your left leading to rocky areas, a lovely lagoon to your right, and changing rooms in front of you. Follow the short walkway straight ahead to access the beach. The sand here is on the coarser side. Driftwood is common. You’ll find fun driftwood forts along the beach!

Accessing Reid State Park

Reid State Park Georgetown Maine is about a 30-minute drive from Bath, Maine. Enter the park and pay the entry fee. Two large parking areas provide access to the park. Veering to the right after the ranger station will lead you to the southwest end of Mile Beach. Driving straight will lead to the northeast end. Both parking areas are large but can still be busy during the popular summer months. We spent our day at the northeast end, Griffith’s Head.

The Griffith’s Head area has a building with changing rooms and restrooms. There are also showers to rinse off after your Maine beach time. From here, you can access walking trails to the gorgeous rocky Maine coastline, a path to a beautiful lagoon, and a short walk to the Reid State Park beach!

Hiking Trails

Trails can be found along Mile Beach and throughout the rest of the park. Hiking in Maine has a good post detailing some of the trails and a big loop that goes throughout the park.

We didn’t get a chance to do much hiking but saw many enticing spots on our drive in and during our short walks through the park.

Reid State Park cost and other info

The Reid State Park fee was $6 for residents, $8 for non-residents, and $2 for non-resident seniors when we visited. The fee is charged per person. Annual passes are also available. Reid State Park hours are from 9 AM until sunset all year unless otherwise specified.

Pets are not allowed on beaches between April 1 and September 30.

The park has picnic tables and charcoal grills scattered throughout. Mile Beach has changing rooms and bathrooms. You’ll also find sunscreen dispensers and the LL Bean booth where beach gear can be borrowed.

Parking was plentiful at both the north and south areas during our visit. Though I expect it could fill up in popular months.
