It is 16 mi (26 km) southeast of Bath, ME.
Mile Beach Maine
Mile Beach is a lovely sandy Maine beach that tends to be a bit less busy than other Maine beaches. The beach and surrounding Reid State Park are popular for surfing (rated a top surf spot in Maine), swimming, kayaking, relaxing on the beach, hiking, and picnicking.
When you arrive at Mile Beach, you will see the beach in front of you, walking trails to your left leading to rocky areas, a lovely lagoon to your right, and changing rooms in front of you. Follow the short walkway straight ahead to access the beach. The sand here is on the coarser side but is still pleasant to walk through barefoot. Driftwood is common on the beach. You’ll find fun forts built from it lining the beach that are great for entertaining kids and adults!

Need beach chairs and other gear for Mile Beach? Look for an LL Bean shipping container by the lagoon at the northeast end of the beach where chairs and other gear can be borrowed for the day!
During your visit, you’ll often see many people in the water swimming and surfing. Beyond spending time in the water, you can enjoy the hiking trails and picnic areas, and look for birds. So groups with beach lovers and those who would rather be in the woods can all enjoy a visit to the area.
Accessing Mile Beach Maine
Mile Beach is in Reid State Park. It is about a 30-minute drive from Bath, Maine. To get to Mile Beach, enter Reid State Park and pay the entry fee. Two large parking areas provide access to the park. Veering to the right after the ranger station will lead you to the southwest end of Mile Beach. Driving straight will lead to the northeast end. Both parking areas are large but can still be busy during the popular summer months. We spent our day at the northeast end, Griffith’s Head.
The northeast end of Mile Beach has a building with changing rooms and restrooms. There are also showers to rinse off after your Maine beach time. From here, you can then access walking trails to the gorgeous rocky Maine coastline, a path to a beautiful lagoon, and a short walk to the beach! It was a windy day with nice waves providing a lovely ocean soundscape. The waves were unfortunately breaking too close to shore for our friend to surf that day.
We loved seeing all of the driftwood gathered up on the beach. People had built some impressive forts from it! I don’t know why so much driftwood collects at Mile Beach. If you have ideas, please tell us in the comments!
Mile Beach Trails
Hiking trails can be found near and along Mile Beach if you’d like to explore the rest of Reid State Park. Hiking in Maine has a good post detailing some of the trails and a big loop that goes throughout the park.
We particularly liked the rocky area to the left of the main parking area. That gave amazing views like this

Mile Beach Maine cost and other info
The Reid State Park and Mile Beach entrance fee was $6 for residents, $8 for non-residents, and $2 for non-resident seniors when we visited. The fee is charged per person. Annual passes are also available. Mile Beach is open from 9 AM until sunset all year unless otherwise specified.
Pets are not allowed on Mile Beach between April 1 and September 30.
In addition to the changing rooms and bathrooms, you’ll find sunscreen dispensers and the LL Bean booth where beach gear can be borrowed. There are picnic tables and charcoal grills scattered throughout the park near Mile Beach.
Parking was plentiful during our visit. Though I expect it could fill up in popular months.
Wrapping up
Even though our friend didn’t get to surf, we had a great day at Mile Beach Maine! The views were stunning. We appreciated the mix of the traditional rocky Maine coastline with a long stretch of sand.
